Córdoba stands out for its interesting combination of Roman, Arab and Spanish culture throughout history. It was the ancient capital of al-Andalus,

The Mezquita or Mosque-Cathedral

The Cathedral is a truly impressive landmark in the centre of Córdoba. Dating back to the year 784, it is a mix of Moorish, Baroque and Gothic architecture. The highlight is the main prayer room, where you will see magnificent frescoes of the evangelists and more than 1,250 columns.

Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos

This truly palatial fortification that highlights the history of Cordoba and Spain.  The building and grounds, is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It combines Roman, Gothic and Moorish architecture in a landscaped area full of fountains, cypress, orange and lemon trees. One of the highlights is the Paseo de los Reyes, lined with statues of the former kings and queens of Córdoba.

From 1236, and the Christian conquest of the city by Fernando III, it has been a royal residence.

In Roman times it was to all intents and purposes a fortress, benefiting from its privileged location on the banks of the Guadalquivir river.

During the Muslim interest in the area it was part of many buildings that made up the Umayyad fortress.

The current building was ordered to be built by Alfonso XI in 1328.

Throughout its history it has performed very diverse functions: in the Modern Age it was the headquarters of the Inquisition, from 1822 to 1931 it was a prison and later it housed military installations until its transfer to the Córdoba City Council in 1955.

Festival of the Courtyards of Córdoba

The patios of the town are celebrated at the beginning of May, when the private patios are open to the public for twelve days. Houses were often built around a central patio and these are adorned with fountains and every part of the walls and ground covered in planters full of colour. A real treat if you get your timing right - 2024 - 6th to 19th May but beware they close from 1400 - 1800 for siesta and attending their blooms. So early morning or in the evening is the time to visit
